An Edinburgh man has helped raise over £1,000 for a leading cancer support charity – having completed an abseil challenge down the Forth Rail Bridge.

Richard Thompson is senior account manager at office equipment specialist Capital Document Solutions, where he has worked for the past 27 years.

Along with partner Jennifer Grant, Richard completed the 165ft descent to raise funds for MacMillan Cancer Support – a cause which is particularly close to Richard’s heart, having lost his mother, Isabelle, to the disease nearly 10 years ago.

Richard (53), who lives near Ratho with Jennifer (47), said: “The idea started off as a bit of a laugh when I suggested we both take part in the abseil challenge as a mutual Valentine’s Day gift. But as the day drew nearer, it began to dawn on me what I had got us into – especially since I don’t have the best head for heights.

“I was in the Edinburgh Diving Club in my younger days but this challenge was something completely alien to both of us – even though Jennifer and I are both outdoors people, who enjoy skiing, dog walking and golf.

“A lot of our family members, friends and colleagues thought we were mad for doing it but they have all been terrific in backing us.

“Towards the end of my mother’s life, she received fantastic support from the staff at St Columba’s Hospice in Edinburgh so I know all about the level of care that organisations such as Macmillan offer to people who are battling the disease.

“This is the first time that I’ve actively raised money specifically for a cancer support charity and it means a great deal to be able to help support Macmillan continue their excellent work even in this small way.

“Luckily the challenge itself went off without a hitch and we were fortunate enough to get some decent weather on the day. I think for our next challenge, though, we’ll be keeping our feet firmly on the ground!”
